minor explorations (1999/2000)

I once described my walks along the peripheries of Brighton on which I made these photographs as 'minor explorations', at the time I was in my third year of studying photography and was struggling with the need to fit my work into an easily explained 'project'. Instead I began to walk out beyond the edges of the town with my camera and made photographs without a predefined concept to pin them to.

Over several months I explored this thin, shifting landscape that exists between the urban and the rural. The first contact sheets were a revelation to me, I cut them out and carried them around in my pocket, I studied them to try and work out why I liked them, then I made more.
